What to Pack for a Tanzania Safari?
Days on safari swing between cool, dusty early-morning game drives and warm, bright afternoons — with the occasional shower during the rainy season. Neutral-colored clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and a good pair of binoculars matter far more than anything technical. Pack light: most lodges offer laundry service, and light-aircraft transfers between parks often cap baggage at 15kg in a soft-sided bag.
Get Ready
How to Prepare for Your Safari
No fitness training required — safari preparation is mostly about logistics, health precautions, and knowing what to expect once you're in the vehicle.
Health & Vaccinations
Check yellow fever requirements, start malaria prophylaxis, and confirm routine vaccines 6–8 weeks before departure.
Pack Light, Pack Smart
Use a soft-sided bag for light-aircraft transfers, and stick to neutral colors for game drives and walking safaris.
Practice Your Camera
Get comfortable with zoom, burst mode, and low-light settings before you're facing a hunting cheetah at dawn.
Plan Your Route
Balance parks by season — Great Migration timing shifts month to month across the Serengeti ecosystem.
Travel Safely
Health & Safety on Safari
Tanzania is a malaria-risk area, so prevention is the biggest health consideration for most travelers — prescribed antimalarials, repellent, and covering up after dusk go a long way. The sun and heat across the savannah are also easy to underestimate.
Wildlife is wild. Every park sets clear rules on distance and vehicle exits — your guide's instructions are there to keep everyone safe.
Choose an operator whose guides are trained in first aid and wildlife safety, and who carries a proper medical kit and reliable radio or satellite communication on every game drive.
- 01 Take antimalarial medication as prescribed and use repellent after dusk.
- 02 Stay in the vehicle unless your guide confirms it's safe to step out.
- 03 Drink plenty of water and wear high-SPF sunscreen daily.
- 04 Keep a safe distance from all wildlife — guides know the buffer zones.
- 05 Carry a basic first-aid kit and any personal medications with you.
- 06 Confirm your operator's guides are trained in first aid and wildlife safety.

Best Safari Circuits for Travelers
Serengeti National Park
Tanzania's most famous park, home to the Great Migration and consistently high predator sightings year-round. The northern and central regions each shine at different times of year, so timing your visit to the migration matters.
Ngorongoro Crater
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world's largest intact volcanic caldera, holding an extraordinary concentration of wildlife within its walls — a near-guaranteed Big Five day.
Tarangire National Park
Best known for its enormous elephant herds and ancient baobab trees, Tarangire comes alive in the dry season as wildlife concentrates around the Tarangire River.
Lake Manyara National Park
A compact, scenic park set beneath the Rift Valley escarpment, known for tree-climbing lions, groundwater forest, and — when water levels are right — thousands of flamingos along the shoreline.
Nyerere National Park (Selous)
Africa's largest protected wilderness area, threaded by the Rufiji River. Boat safaris alongside game drives and walking safaris make this a wonderfully varied, low-traffic circuit.
Ruaha National Park
Tanzania's largest national park and one of its wildest, where rugged river-gorge scenery meets one of Africa's largest remaining lion populations, largely away from the crowds.
